Mkandawire Benson Sitwe (2010). What is the significance of learning activities/experiences in the teaching and learning process. article

Ø Learning activities and experiences are the interaction and experiences between the learners and conditions within the external environment to which these learners would react and respond ( Tyler 1949). In other words, these are activities performed and experienced by the learner so as to move towards the attainment of defined objectives. Wheeler (1967) emphasis that learning activities /experience are a means of instilling or changing behavior .Learning activities /experience therefore must not be considered in a less general way for they intend to contribute to behavior outcomes which may involve less maturity.

Ø The significance of learning activities/experiences in the teaching and learning process is that they help to achieve the objectives of the subject in a practical way thereby achieving the aims and goals of the curriculum. However emphasis should be placed upon the active rather than that passive activities .These activities should make all learners participate in the lesson .Some of the active learning activities are ;groupwork, education trip ,project work ,education drama and so on.

Ø Learning activities and experiences are very significant in the teaching and learning process because they engages pupils in an imaginatively situations which encourages them to raise their own question and express their own opinion about what they are learning. For example using a role play when someone is teaching about conflicts between parents and children in a religious education lesson or scramble for Africa. The learning activities and experience in other words leads the subject itself to exploration or expose them to reflection

Ø Another significance of learning activities/experiences in the teaching and learning process is that they open up opportunities for pupils to apply what they learn in class to their own lives .For example using group discussion ,project in HE(Home economics) will allow learners to go and practice what they learn.

Ø The significance of learning activities/experiences in the teaching and learning process is that it allows learners acquire information which help them in their learning process .Evident when learners are taken out for an education tour .It can either be a religious historical or geographic sites. Learners will learn new information which supplements’ what has been written and books and learnt in class.

Ø Learning activities and experiences engage pupils interest and help them to see parallel in their own lives .This is because learners are required to use the information they are learning in a way that enhances their understanding of concepts that are the focus of the lesson .For instance when teaching about Islamic way of praying take the learners to a Mosque so that they see themselves how moslems conduct their prayers .Afterwards the child needs to draw a conclusion on the similarities and differences between a moslem way of praying and his /her faith.

Ø Learning activities /experiences help learners and teachers to explore the meaning and significance of the information they are learning .For instance telling the learners a story .If the story is well taught the situation it depicts can be conceived of as being possible within the experience of the child who are listening to it .In addition showing learners artifacts.

Ø To sum up learning activities /experience are very significant to the teaching and learning process. Hence teachers must plan learning activities which require the pupils to use information they are learning in a way that enhances their understanding of the concepts that are focused in the lesson
